Food System
Food is a central part of many students daily routine. Therefore it is crucial to incorporate many sustainable elements to the dining experience. A holistic composting program such as the one designed at the University of New Hampshire is one easy way that LV campuses can become more sustainable. The following are some basic recommendations:
- Compost organic matter to be used for a campus organic garden to close waste loops and to reduce costs of transporting garbage off-site
- Purchase fair trade, local, and organic foods
- Limit waste of paper, plastic, and Styrofoam by implementing reusable plates, cups, and silverware
- Supply more vegetarian /vegan food options and supply local free range, organic meats, eggs, and organic dairy products for other diet preferences
