MusikFest 2007 "One World, Many Rhythms"
In 1984, nearly 182,000 people attended a small, grass-roots music festival in Bethlehem, Pa. featuring 118 performers and 295 performances on six stages. At the time, no one knew how large the event would grow or how long it would last. It is time for this well-renowned festival to become GREEN!
Thanks to this year's eco-volunteers, recycling bins were matched with nearly all trash bins! Here Peter Crownfield and Laura Deutsch are chilling in 'Liederplatz' with the big blue bins.

2007 Statistics:
- sold out all 24,000 refillable mugs
- estimated attendance: 1,052,000
Possibilities for greening future MusikFests:
Energy Conservation
- no excessive cooling of tents
- no use of wide screen tvs
- no blow-up tents
- CFL (compact flourescent lightbulbs) and LED (light emitting diode) lighting
Paper Conservation
- recycled napkins and paper plates
- no individual handwipes @ bathroom, use bulk container of waterless hand sanitizer instead
Renewable Energy Sources
- motorized vehicles (gators, trolleys, etc) use vegetable fry oil from vendors
Education
- children's area for ecological enrichment and planting of trees or Monocacy Creek restoration
Waste Reduction
- use reusable plates, utensils, cups as much as possible
- when using plastic, only allow #1, #2 (NO #6- yuck! hormone mimickers!)
- no styrofoam
- no balloons (if necessary, use biodegradable)
Food
- local and organic choices
- vegetarian and vegan options required for each vendor
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
How can we monitor the greenhouse gas emissions from year to year?
Can Musikfest become carbon-neutral?
